Many athletes could be staying at Rotorua hotels this June to take part in an event over the Queen's Birthday Long Weekend.

The 3D Rotorua Off-Road Winter Multisport Festival consists of ten different races, including runs, cycling courses and duathlons.

Held on June 3rd, the 50km premier multisport title race is likely to be the highlight of the day.

This competition starts with an eight km lap of Lake Okareka in contestants' preferred craft followed by a 30km mountain bike ride through Whakerewarewa Forest and ending with a 12 km trail run, which the organisers said is scenic.

"Stunning says it all," the event's website states. "Heading straight into the magnificent Redwoods Forest, this course takes in the best soft trails one could possibly imagine - not placing a single foot on a road."

There will be 150 prizes for entrants worth NZ$75,000 (£38,833) in giveaways and NZ$10,000 in cash, as well as 42 medals.
