The Maori, the indigenous inhabitants of New Zealand inherit a complex and fascinating cultural legacy. For the inquisitive visitor who desires to gain an authentic insight into the Maori culture and heritage there is no better way than to visit the enthralling Tamaki Maori Village. One of the most captivating family activities in Rotorua, an excursion to the village will never be forgotten. The Tamaki Maori Village attempts to replicate as closely as possible the traditional lifestyles and occupations that would have been seen in a typical Maori village prior to the arrival of Europeans.

The experience commences on the way to the village which is located deep within an undisturbed forest. En route to the destination, a guide will elaborate on the Maori way of life and their history, stories and legends.

Visitors are welcomed with the ‘Powhiri’ ceremony which involves several aspects. A number of Maori warriors conduct impressive, challenging ‘haka’ dances signifying their strength and courage. Subsequently a peace offering is placed at the feet of the ‘Chief’ (a member of the visiting party). The haunting welcome call ‘Karanga’ and the welcome dance follow.

In the village visitors will learn the traditions, art forms and occupations of the Maori. Guests will see warriors practicing with their weapons, authentic horticultural techniques, traditional tattooing   and women engaged in weaving and other craftwork. Villagers recount tales of their history and ancestors.

Guests will be treated to an authentic Maori feast, the ‘hangi’ meal roasted for three hours beneath the ground in pits and grilled using heated stones. The excursion to the Tamaki Maori Village concludes with the formal closing ceremony involving speeches and songs.
