There is fun for all the family when staying in Queenstown Hotels in the new year as the Lake Hayes Show takes place on January 14th.

Visitors can make the most of a great weekend as the event follows on a day after the Glenorchy Races day.

But rather than chasing each other round a track, many of the horses in this parade are set to be setting a sedate pace as the kids get a chance to get up close with them and other animals, although others will be putting on displays of show jumping.

There will also be petting zoos, sheep dog trials and sheep shearing demos at this celebration of rural New Zealand life, which has plenty of children's entertainment on offer.

Run by the Lake County A&P Society, the event has been running at its current site since 1973.

Visitors in Queenstown on New Year's Eve will be able to see in 2012 many hours ahead of family and friends back home in Britain with free public entertainment in the town centre, including a fireworks display.
