News|Te Anau Harness Street Races returnOn January 14th, a horse race will proceed through the town, on which visitors are allowed to bet. The traditional occasion began in 1992 and went on until 2003, but then went into recess, partly due to concerns about the health and safety risks and liabilities. However, it was revived last year and will be repeated against this month - the 14th race to be held in the town. "Following the successful revival of this iconic event last year, the 14th of January 2012 will again see Mokonui Street ring to the sound of hoofbeats," the organisers stated. The event was initially inspired by the stories of former hotel manager Anna Bastiaans of the Netherlands, who spoke about a tradition from his home town - Roden - that involved two horses competing in the streets. Also in Te Anau, the Milford Mountain Classic cycle race was held yesterday (January 11th). Book your Stay at the Kingsgate Hotel Te Anau ![]() 12/01/2012 |
