News|February date for Whakanuia at Rotorua's WhakarewarewaWhakarewarewa Thermal Village will be celebrating Whakanuia - which means 'to acknowledge, to promote, to celebrate' - on February 6th. The venue is "situated in the heart of the tourist diamond of Rotoura" and is located in an area of geothermal activity, with hot springs and mud pools part of the scenery. It is the home of the Tuhourangi/Ngati Wahiao people, who say they have been welcoming people into the village for two centuries. They have been celebrating Whakanuia for five years and each time it has a different theme. In 2012, the topic the event is focusing on is Africa and anybody who is interested can go along to enjoy food, entertainment and crafts linked to the continent. Whakanuia is about "bringing our community together to celebrate Waitangi Day within a living Maori environment - enabling all visitors to enjoy a day of fun, sharing and learning", the organisers stated.
