Those staying in Hamilton hotels in the new year may be there at the right time of year to enjoy the Parachute Festival, a summer musical extravaganza.

New Zealand's answer to Glastonbury or T in the Park, the event lasts from January 27th to 30th and while some might want to camp, visitors staying in Hamilton can also drop in with a day pass, sharing the fun with crowds of up to 25,000.

It will offer a chance to enjoy a range of performers British audiences will be unfamiliar with, as the likes of The Rocket Summer, Ascend the Hill, Strahan, Fire at Will and We Stole the Sun, in what organisers describe as a "mish-mash" of styles. 

For those with kids, there will even be a junior section with fun and activities.

Other big events coming up in Hamilton include the New Zealand heavyweight boxing title on February 8th, which will see defending champion Richard Tutaki take on All Blacks rugby star Sonny Bill Williams.
