Sports fans are likely to be booking rooms at Dunedin hotels next month when the New Zealand National Slalom Windsurfing Championships will be held in the town.

The occasion has been scheduled for February 2nd to 6th at the area's Otago Harbour and includes four full days of competitions and events as well as a reserve date in case of poor weather conditions.

A maximum of ten competitions per day will be put on, although what categories the contests will be in depends on the number of entries.

Silver fleet races may be an option for those who do not feel they are ready to compete in the National Open Men's or Women's events.

The championships have been organised by WetClub WaterSports' Mike Dorking with the Dunedin Windsports Association and Windsurfing New Zealand and is a New Zealand Windsurfing Association sanctioned event.

According to the town's official website, Dunedin is home to the world's rarest penguin, the steepest street on the globe and the most photographed building in the country.
