Auckland CBD & Newmarket
Location & Attractions|Auckland CBD & NewmarketThe Auckland CBD has been the focus of the economic and commercial development of New Zealand for almost two centuries. In fact it was the site of the initial European settlement in Auckland. From these early beginnings the CBD developed steadily, becoming increasingly modernised; today it consists of high-rise buildings, mainly used for retail and commercial purposes. The Auckland CBD boasts a multitude of higher education, cultural and arts venues, more so than any area of comparative size in New Zealand. Newmarket, a suburb bordering the CBD, rivals the latter as a focus for commerce and retail stores. Newmarket is often called the fashion capital of New Zealand. The main road, Broadway contains two cinemas, expansive shopping centres and numerous smaller stores, restaurants, cafes and bars. One of Newmarket’s longstanding attractions is its Olympic length swimming pool, well patronised by Aucklanders, and another noteworthy site is the Olympic War Memorial. Not to be missed is Lumsden Green, a park adorned with an avant-garde fountain and a modernist stainless steel sculpture by well known Auckland sculptor Marte Szirmay. When searching for Auckland hotel accommodation, the name that springs to mind is Kingsgate Hotel Parnell, Auckland. This superior accommodation located between Newmarket and the Auckland CBD, provides the dedicated service that makes for a delightful stay. |
