The Sarjeant Gallery is furnished with an array of beautiful works, and is definitely worth a visit whilst on holiday in Wanganui.
Made up of Henry Sarjeant's personal collection and a variety of contemporary exhibitions, this invigorating art museum and collection is sure to inspire. Paintings of national and international significance adorn its walls, taking visitors on a journey through the 20th and 21st centuries. Among the works to grace its walls are six by Wanganui artist Herbert Ivan Bubbage.
The building itself is also worthy of note, as its Neo-Classical design is based upon ancient Greek aesthetics. Its grand central dome is hugely impressive, as well as its external cladding of cream Oamaru stone. The interior is similarly beautiful, and is listed as a Category 1 building by the Historic Places Trust Act of 1993.
The gallery is open from Monday to Sunday, from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.
