Lake Taupo

About Taupo, New Zealand

Taupo is a small yet bustling town located in the central North Island of New Zealand. It lies at the northern end of Lake Taupo, at its outlet into the Waikato River. Taupo's urban centre is very compact and its size ensures that most of the town’s hotels, restaurants and attractions are located in close proximity to each other. Taupo can also be used as a base to visit the surrounding country, including areas such as Turangi, Tongariro National Park, Mount Ruapehu and Waiouru and the western bays.

For the traveler, Taupo offers quite a number of interesting sights. New Zealand’s most visited attraction the Huka Falls is located to the north of Taupo, while attractions such as the Aratiatia Dam and the pretty lakeside village of Kinloch are also firm favorites. Lake Taupo Museum and the Art Gallery are ideal outings for history buffs while Mount Tauhara offers stunning views of the town. Other popular Taupo attractions include, Waipahihi Botanical Reserve and the Volcanic Activity Centre.

Some of the more popular activities available in Taupo include, bungy jumping, cruising / sailing on Lake Taupo, jet boating, sky-diving and even skiing on Mt Ruapehu located less than an hour away. Lake Taupo is a fisherman’s paradise and is widely considered to be the Rainbow Trout capital of the world while the lake's branches also contain excellent schools of Brown Trout.

In recent years, a combination of attractive venues and a supportive community has seen the event industry in Taupo grow in leaps and bounds. Today, Taupo hosts a number of major international and national events.  The Award winning Chelsea Flower Show Garden is a real visitor highlight and has been relocated by the museum on Story Place in Taupo.
