More people may be booking rooms in Queensland hotels this year, as the Southern Lakes region of New Zealand has been described as one of the best holiday destinations in the world.

The nation's official tourism body 100% Pure New Zealand highlighted the area was ranked the eight[h] Best in Travel by popular travel guide Lonely Planet.

Queenstown slight rep and the Southern Lakes - a region that also includes Fiordland and Lake Wanaka - was singled out for its scenery and all-year activities.

Indeed, the area was described by 100% Pure New Zealand as the nation's "adventure capital", with sports such as bungee jumping and skiing among the pursuits that can be practised in the locality.

"Queenstown’s stunning scenery, high-end recreational activities and luxury accommodation attract international celebrities and discerning travellers," the body stated.

Other New Zealand regions receiving recognition this year included Kaikoura - where people can enjoy whale-watching - which became the first place in the world to be awarded Gold Community certification by Green Globe.
