Horse racing fans staying in Wellington hotels can enjoy the city's biggest racing event of the year when the Wellington Cup Carnival takes place in late January.

The event is held at Trentham Racecourse and spread over three dates, starting with the Trentham Wine and Racing Festival on January 21st, when five races can be enjoyed along with lots of food and fine wine.

On January 23rd it is Interislander Summer festival Family Day, where the racing is accompanied by a range of free activities and games for the children, making it the best day to bring the kids.

And the 28th brings Wellington Cup day itself, when the big race will be accompanied with plenty of fashion as a hint of Ascot comes to the land of the long white cloud.

The Wellington Cup is one of the longest-established events on New Zealand's sporting calendar, first being held in 1867.
