Those staying in Wellington hotels over the new year have many choices over how to mark the occasion and one of these is to head to the Southern Cross Garden Bar Restaurant on Abel Street.

It will be hosting music from the Roseneath Centennial Ragtime Band, offering a southern US flavour as some New Orleans-style music offers a cool way to see out 2011 and see in 2012.

Playing the kind of vintage music enjoyed in the Big Easy back in the 1930s and 1940s, the band is influenced by the likes of Louis Armstrong and Preservation Hall Jazz Band of New Orleans.

And the best news of all may be that entry to the venue is completely free.

The venue offers plenty of food and drink too, so it may be a good place to go for tea and start the party early.
