The Wellington International Jazz Festival has established a name for itself as one of the most
significant events of its kind in the region. This premier jazz festival in Wellington is
considered both locally and overseas as one of the most innovative jazz features. Jazz enthusiasts
will enjoy music of the highest quality in the genre, provided by the most talented artists in New
Zealand and across the world. Performances are held in a multitude of venues across the city,
consolidating its status as a focus for music and the arts.
The biennial event was created by local jazz musicians who wanted to lift the profile of jazz
music in New Zealand, and to enable Wellington residents to enjoy the finest music of the genre.
Providing an opportunity for local artists to collaborate and work with internationally renowned
musicians, the extravaganza constantly endeavours to expand the boundaries of the art form.
Enthusiastic audiences are treated to a diverse array of musical styles in a series of ticketed as
well as free performances, concerts and workshops.
In previous editions of the festival artists from geographical regions as diverse as Brazil,
Cuba, Tunisia, France, Poland and North America have graced the stages of the event. In the past
more than a hundred musicians from New Zealand have collaborated with as many as 75 artists from
across the globe to present a truly unforgettable experience.
Rather than confining itself to traditional jazz, the music provided blends a combination of
blues, soul, funk, R&B, gospel and Latin elements with contemporary and traditional jazz,
making the music offered accessible to a wide spectrum of listeners.
