Having been consolidated officially as the New Zealand International Film Festival in 2009, the Wellington Film Festival was inaugurated in 1972 by the Wellington Film Society. Its inaugural event featured a collection of seven films and has grown immensely since then to include a programme of over 150 films.

Featuring a collection of local and international films, the International Film Festival 2011 will showcase an array of genres in film, giving the audience an extensive range of cinematic options. Having a diversified combination of entertainment, the majority of the featured programmes will be from New Zealand as the festival has a longstanding tradition of encouraging local filmmakers. A tradition that has endured since its inception, the festival has contributed immensely to the film culture of New Zealand.
