Known for its captivating landscapes and intimidating volcanoes, Auckland is an amazing destination for those in search of a memorable holiday amidst picture-perfect surroundings. Rich in cultural heritage and studded with charming architectural sites, Auckland tourist attractions should be reserved a special place in every traveller’s itinerary.

Arguably the most frequented art gallery in the city, the Auckland Art Gallery is located at the very heart of Auckland City. The construction project of the building was completed in 1887 and the art gallery was ready for public viewing in 1888. The building itself, quite minimalist in appearance, will no doubt be a charming sight for the first time visitor. Famous English architect Charles D’Ebro and Grainger were those responsible for the design and construction of the structure and its iconic clock tower.

Visitors to the gallery will be able to witness a fascinating variety of exhibits of both local and international origin. The collection also features an impressive selection of Maori art along with several masterpieces which are thought to have originated from the Pacific Islands. A number of intricately crafted sculptures and European paintings can be spotted among the exhibits as well.

The International Collection features an array of pieces spanning a period of six centuries, created by brilliantly talented artists from across the world including George Richmond, Jacques Callot, Giovanni Guercino and Franceso Bartolozzi. The New Zealand Collection, although dominated by the likes of John Kinder, showcases the artistic talents of some of the country’s most in influential painters such as William Hamilton, Clifford Murray, Valerie Lewis, Mona Malcolm, Thomas Gulliver, Sydney Lough Thompson, Gilbert Meadows and Thomas Hutton.
